Press Release

The Android-based PAX IM30 devices now enable travellers to pay for tickets using EMV contactless cards on the SRT (State Railway of Thailand) Red Line in Bangkok, Thailand.

As a premium and interactive interface that can be integrated into all kiosks and vending machines, PAX IM30 is designed to increase sales, implement security and be impervious to environmental damage. It combines all the cool benefits of Android POS with the robustness of unattended product, so merchants can generate new revenue streams in any self-service environment.

The SRT Red Line (Red Line Mass Transit System Project) is a commuter rail system serving the Bangkok Metropolitan Region in Thailand. The PAX IM30 devices have been installed at stations along the SRT Red Line to support contactless ticketing. In the past, each public transport operator in Bangkok had its own ticketing and closed-loop cash management system, which accepted smart cards or tokens.  As a result of the absence of an integrated ticketing system, passengers were required to carry multiple cards or purchase separate tokens for each transfer on their journey.

The Ministry of Transport of Thailand began upgrading the existing ticketing system a few months ago.  The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand is collaborating with Krung Thai Bank in the development of a fare payment system that supports contactless payments in order to increase convenience for passengers.

When the enhanced payment system is fully implemented, it will be available on all Bangkok’s train lines, including the Skytrain Lines and Metropolitan Rapid Transit, as well as on some of the city’s boats and buses, and even on the toll roads of the expressways. For transit operators in the city, it will substantially reduce their procurement, ticketing and transaction costs.
